Barns

For God's Sake !! Submitted by 'Grizz' from Alexandra, New Zealand.

God, Allah, Buddha, Jehovah ... The list is long. It depends on the believer as to what name is used. Same goes for which book is used. The bible has a vast number of versions (too many to list here). It seems each religion has it's own version of events. For a Deity that is supposed to be loving and benevolent, God is responsible for more human suffering and death in the history of man than anything else!!!

Each religion will tell you they are the ONE and that all others are False and their God is a false God and some go to war to prove it. And yet no one can give us positive proof that their God actually exists! "It's a matter of faith" is the standard answer! Faith in what I ask you?

It all sound like nonsense to me!! I have more faith in the existence of aliens and little green buggers than in an all powerful entity.

It All Started With...

So let me have it Barns lets really rock the alley with this one Huh

Hello Grizz! Great topic, subject of heated discussion for centuries. Both logical and not. Barns was not going to pick much of an argument with you on this. However: not having cajones to do so gave him incentive.... So... You are on, pilgrim! Alley fight it is!!

Yep I seem to have stirred a hornets nest , So lets have at it shall we? For startersCould you please exsplain to me which version of the bible you Believe to be the correct version of events, As I have ( so far) found 15 DIFFERENT books called "The Bible" All claimed to be "The Word of God" by their authors and all telling the same story ,with suttle differences along the way

Grizz ( 508 posts / 14 fights ) from Balclutha, Clutha (New Zealand) on 06/15 at 08:23PM PT

It seems to depend on which faith you follow ,as to how you are suppoesd to live your life ,Different faiths have different rules, Catholics , Don't eat meat at Lent, Jews wont eat pork , Mormans Could have more than one wife, And yet they all claim to be following the word of "GOD" I can only assume they all follow Different "GODs" even though they tell me there is only one true god .

Well, my good man. You did stirr up a bit of GOOD DUST! On Ctoads, THAT IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING!Back up a tad, before we argue versions of the Bible BEFORE we argue the benefit of having a "bible" - or whatever the religion specific "good book" is. And back yet one more step: we need A NUMBER OF GOOD DEFINITIONS OF WHAT "GOD" MIGHT BE!Rather than rejecting THE NOTION of a higher power in its entirety, depriving all the billions "out there" of their need to BELIEVE in a higher power, or at least have a refuge to pray to, we may want to look at all manner of phenomena without explanations (yet ...), the need or perhaps the signficant desire of most people for belief systems and last but not least, the very basic human need "to belong."

Barns ( 886 posts / 24 fights ) from Den Of Ubiquity, California (United States) on 06/17 at 05:58PM PT

Agreed, My question is ,Does the innate need of humans to "belong" make us so gullable that we will accept and therefor believe in /have faith in some thing that nobody can actually prove exists ? If I turn on a T.V in the morning I get some bible thumping born again demon dodger from the U.S.Telling me that if I buy his/her book for $29.95 and contribute to their building fund ,They will pray for me and all my sins WILL be forgiven!! Jerry Reed wrote a song called "Praise the Lord and pass the Money" and these guys/ gals took it to heart ...

As to the Bible Thompers, Barns' issue with them is that Barns does not have the gall to be making money that way .... Imagine .....Proving the existence of GOD is secondary to the need people have to believe in a greater power. A good refuge for wishes; a good crutch of ordinary and big failures; a good rationalization for why bad things happen to good people. On the empirical side, the chicken and egg give Barns pause. As do all manner of unexplained phenomena. As Baconian as Barns may want to be -- we all know everything, since everything is deduced from other/prior knowledge, there is phenomena that is not explained. On the practical side of things, what will we SCREAM in the throws of extasy, or say when we have a near miss on the highway: "Oh Griswald?" Nah. Likely OH GOD!

Barns ( 886 posts / 24 fights ) from Den Of Ubiquity, California (United States) on 06/21 at 04:25PM PT

Question 2 Is the need to believe in a "higher power" masquerading the need for someone or thing to blame when things turn to crap for no logical reason . Pagans /Druids believe that every thing has a spirit/ soul and the Highest of these is known as Ga-ya ( the Earth Spirit ) The North American Indians follow the some train of thought ,But if I start preaching my theories on Aliens I'm called a lunatic and laughed at !! Who's to say Your "God" isn't one of my little grey buggers The Aztecs thought so, Why is nobody else prepared to at least consider the possibility ???

Grizz ( 508 posts / 14 fights ) from Balclutha, Clutha (New Zealand) on 06/21 at 04:36PM PT

Grizz. Barns very much considers ALL MANNER OF MANIFESTATIONS or ITTERATIONS of "God." Although ... Barns thinks that God is a very good looking woman with a very bad attitude! Barns looks at the matter as a "belief system" rather than anything iconic. Little grey creatures will do just as well. As long as THEY can explain why a 100% identical grain of "anything" that grows made in a laboratory will rot in soil whereas the "real" thing will grow and sprout. As to your other point, YES. Religion - the blind belief in a higher being IS a convenient crutch for things that happen for GOOD reasons, thus, an excuse, and for things that happen just a matter of happenstance..... Then the fundamentalists will argue that "happenstance" is clearly ordined by a higher power.... Therefore ... Religion IS blind.

Well I wonder at your particular version or vision of God and what leads you to this belief ( some California Gold ,Prime suspect) Any "belief System" Should be based on fact in the first instance ,And as yet history has NOT supplied any hard evidence to support these beliefs that are held so dear to so many.FACT ,Most of modern Christianity is based on poorly and in some cases incorrect translations of Hebrew Scrolls writen by people a live at the time ,Now given the human trate of exaggeration ,the real tale is possibly nothing like what actually happened. History is full of Myths of "Gods" with extraordinary powers and abilities ...

Grizz ( 508 posts / 14 fights ) from Balclutha, Clutha (New Zealand) on 06/22 at 02:46PM PT

... The Greeks had their "Gods" the Romans also had a "God " for all occations ,Most if not all cultures of man have or had their own "Gods' .So what makes this one so special that people will bear arms against his fellow man?? And why would any right thinking human devote not only their time ,moneyand in some case lives to what is quite possibly the biggest con job in history ???

Barns is NOT going to argue GOD with you. It is akin to refuting the the sun rises in the East in the Western Hemisphere. Why does the earth rotate directionally as it does? No argument that it does. Now ... Barns floated the real concept of belief systems. By definition, as system is an assemblage of things/concepts/empirical components/ and so on, designed to create an environment where someone can function. "Function" includes the entire idea of "getting by" in the face of things unexplained, not understood, happy and anger making. The whole historical reality of endless bloodletting in the name of various "Gods" is the most classically perverse reality of the existence of this world.

Barns ( 886 posts / 24 fights ) from Den Of Ubiquity, California (United States) on 06/23 at 11:57AM PT

As long as we are all born the same way and "hurt" the same way, we should never lay claim to religious, pious, moral superiority, much less murder each other in the name of self-serving scripture written by ancients with power agendae. You cannot, however, entirely refute the NEED for people, evidently some 6 Billion of them, to belong to a religion. Let me direct you back to the original Barns comment on this.... Religion is the opium of the people. Regrettably, whatever benefit "belonging" may have, it has been so corrupted by the institutions IN THE BUSINESS OF RELIGION. Yes. Corrupted by fundamentally self-serving (NOT FLOCK SERVING), power hungry, elitist institutions. HENCE, GRIZZ, Barns' DISCONNECT WITH ORGANIZED RELIGION.....
