You are on point. The potential for abuse is THERE and MAY BE SIGNIFICANT.

The bottom line remains having to make a deal with the devil.

Most Americans appear to be ready to give up some of their freedoms and take some chances with the potential for abuse IN TRADE for worrying less about their kids on school busses crossing a major bridge or driving by a government facility.

SOMEBODY SHOULD TRY TO MAKE THAT POINT TO MR. OBAMA.

Giving up your freedoms for anything or to anyone is a slippery slope. If the government can't find more effective ways to defend against terrorists than to listen in on my overseas conversations with family and friends then we are in more trouble than we think. If you give up the right to question your government you might as well burn up that silly little document we used to revere as the constitution.

What about when divorce lawyers start requesting those surveillance tapes to use against you in court, or those pesky nuisance lawsuit (blackmail)people start requesting those tapes to rip off your insurance companies? You don't have to do anything illegal to lose your shirt defending against something that just might look bad on some grainy video from the corner ATM. How about publishing photos of strip club and massage parlor patrons?

The statistics you cite are very interesting. 79% of the people feel that the government should do what it has been doing. 55% of the people think that the government should get court approval to do that. In a world of instant communications, it is impractical to get court orders for wiretaps in a timely fashion. People need to make up their minds what is most important to them.
