BIG BROTHER IS LISTENING AND WATCHING!! DO YOU CARE ??
"By a 76-19 % margin, American voters say the government should continue monitoring phone calls or e-mail between suspected terrorists in other countries and people in the U.S., according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today.
*But voters say 55-42 % margin that the government should get court orders for this surveillance*."

If you are not doing anything illegal...let it go. If keeping an eye on me going about my daily business keeps me and my family safe, awright.

What about when divorce lawyers start requesting those surveillance tapes to use against you in court, or those pesky nuisance lawsuit (blackmail)people start requesting those tapes to rip off your insurance companies? You don't have to do anything illegal to lose your shirt defending against something that just might look bad on some grainy video from the corner ATM. How about publishing photos of strip club and massage parlor patrons?

Even more so now that we know so much more about you!
OK. OK. Just messing with you.
You are on point. The potential for abuse is THERE and MAY BE SIGNIFICANT.
The bottom line remains having to make a deal with the devil.
Most Americans appear to be ready to give up some of their freedoms and take some chances with the potential for abuse IN TRADE for worrying less about their kids on school busses crossing a major bridge or driving by a government facility.
SOMEBODY SHOULD TRY TO MAKE THAT POINT TO MR. OBAMA.
Hmmmmmm.
Wright has lots of time now that he is retired and not welcome to speak in other churches. AND, OBAMA WILL ABSOLUTELY LISTEN TO HIM.

The statistics you cite are very interesting. 79% of the people feel that the government should do what it has been doing. 55% of the people think that the government should get court approval to do that. In a world of instant communications, it is impractical to get court orders for wiretaps in a timely fashion. People need to make up their minds what is most important to them. Staying alive most likely.

This is a balancing act. We live in a dangerous world. We have to give up some of our privacy and some of our freedoms to be safe or safer in the face of imminent terrorist attacks.

Giving up your freedoms for anything or to anyone is a slippery slope. If the government can't find more effective ways to defend against terrorists than to listen in on my overseas conversations with family and friends then we are in more trouble than we think. If you give up the right to question your government you might as well burn up that silly little document we used to revere as the constitution.

On the one hand, this can be perceived as an invasion of privacy. On the other hand I'm in favor of continued monitoring without a court order if in fact the monitoring is appropriate and justified. Too many Americans are in denial of the threat of terrorists!
