BIG BROTHER - BIG TIME!!
This from the London Times, this morning....
A massive government database holding details of every phone call, e-mail and time spent on the internet by the public is being planned as part of the fight against crime and terrorism [in the U.K.]. Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecoms companies would hand over the records to the Home Office under plans put forward by officials. The information would be held for at least 12 months and the police and security services would be able to access it if given permission from the courts.
1. CAN YOU IMAGINE A GOVERNMENT, ANY GOVERNMENT BEING ABLE TO HANDLE -- WITH CARE -- BILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF PERSONAL AND SENSITIVE RECORDS??
2. CAN YOU IMAGINE A GOVERNMENT, ANY GOVERNMENT, BEING ABLE TO RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO "JUST LOOK INTO SOME STUFF WHILE WE HAVE ALL THAT DATA?"
You can read the article in its entirety here. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS? Just when you thought that the Freedom Act was dicey... Sound Off On This Topic Now!

If someone brings up the argument "If you're not doing anything wrong, you don't have to worry about it." I'm going to puke!

Bush is responsible for hundreds of thousands of people dead by lying his way into a war. Who's the good guy? I trust the constitution that gave us basic human rights for a reason. I don't trust a Government telling us which rights are good for us and which rights are bad for us. That is fascism.

Bush is not the issue, And the last time I looked the UK is not part of the US. Having said that,There is no denying Bush and Blair are largely responsible for the need for these measures,And from research I'd guess the US law agencies already have such a data base on most if all it's citizens and the UK is just playing catch up

That was my point. The Western World is letting Big Brother run roughshod all over our rights...Not just the UK or USA. Not to mention critical thought has gone out the window completely.

I submit that you are wrong. I believe that of all the developed Western nations in the world, we have more unimpeded freedoms in the U.S. than anywhere else. The entire big brother issue must be looked as comparatively to the dangers we live in. Can you be realistic about that?

I agree that we have more freedom than most of the world (at least I'm inclined to agree because I like our country). Though how do we explain the Patriot Act? No matter how egalitarian we think we are and how advanced our democracy is, there are still Demagogs who want to walk right through The Constitution and step all over our rights. You can lie down if you like.

The real point is a practical one. I chose to accept the lesser of two evils. The Patriot Act can easily be explained. It was born with the emotions of the aftermath of 9/11 and is also necessary.

I believe that we are engaged in a war that is potentially much much much bigger than any other we have ever been in. Islamist Fascism and the hundreds of millions of people waging that war is a huge enemy.

Harvard and I are definitely on two sides of the fence on this. Harvard shares a view that many people have, which I can respect but not share. I think that there has to be a way to defend our country and defend our rights. I think we're giant hypocrites if we're telling the world about Democracy and Liberty and we're dismantling it at home.

Yes to see what's going on read the "Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein. Bush and his group are in the process of turning this democracy into a facist state. The same way Mussolini, Hilter, and Stalin took their countries from palimentary democracies to facitst states. The ten steps to this have already been accomplised or in the process. This just one of those steps.

I prefer to not read that drivel. Please tell me what the 10 completed steps are and what is the only step left to complete to the U.S. becoming like pre WWII Italy and Germany.

By the way ... The proposed law is in the U.K., in the event you missed that.
And, were the U.S. to ever contemplate such a law/process, Barns would lead the protest against that in the streets --- on his way to the smallest island in the South Pacific.
Where he would take up residence and become king of all things irrelevant.

The U.K. as well as all of Western Europe have lost their way. Most of society there is decayed beyond belief. They have lost their geographical identities. The U.K. has caved in to Islamism more so than any other Western so called "democracy". The database they want to create and use will be misused. That is a guarantee. Big brother is bad enough. Stupid and dishonest Big Brother is not acceptable.

Isn't this plan very similar to what Bush wanted to do(did?)under the Patriot Act? It's not just Europe. In the Western World there seems to be an insipid and quiet trend toward total acquiescence to government whim when it's spun to 'Protect Freedom' 'Beat the Terrorists'.

I cannt believe that the UK parliament will vote that in. There is not a way the Brittish people will approve it. If that will be the law, the rest of the world will not want to communicate with them.

Right ....
The once proud "British Empire" and its "stiff upper lip" people have gone spineless.
