10 Million starving people in lawless Somalia, stuck somewhere in the 14th century.
Somali equivalent of our FORTUNE 500, the much-in-the-news “Pirates”, threaten the mighty U.S.
Mighty U.S. impotent in policing 1 Million square miles of ocean.
Only solution to piracy – AND ONE MUST BE FOUND BEFORE THE BAREFOOT PIRATES BECOME AL QAEDA MERCENARIES – appears to either invade parts of Somalia or pull off a miracle via a legitimate and effective government in Somalia. The later will not happen.
Open memo to U.S. military: RENT THE MOVIE BLACK HAWK DOWN!
Whatever you might be contemplating, don’t do that again. Mogadishu ain't the "Shores Of Tripoli!" You are missing the principal point: LIFE HAS LITTLE VALUE IN SOMALIA.
Also, slaughtering lots of starving “civilians” that will be used by the fundamentalists and “pirates” as cannon fodder is just disgusting.

And like Zimbabwe, Will any body actually do any thing about those Millions of starving people? OF COURSE NOT!! There's no Oil/Mineral wealth to claim! The only reason anyone is taking notice now is because some of those Starving people have taken the law into their own hands and taken to Piracy to feed them selves. They watched their leaders steal their lives and figured .......

Bottom Line: Relief and Opportunities to their shore, let them sort it out by themselves. Additional policing doesn't help but will increase further burden to the rest of the world.

The concern is that no country or cabal of countries can afford to basically occupy and adopt any country in Africa.
That would be a historically tragic event.
And, that reality may be very tragic in any event. So much aid that SHOULD be directed to Somalia and to much of the rest of Africa is either not destined for them or co-opted by the endemic and ubiquitous corruption there.
An all around looser with tens of millions dying from insidious diseases, tribal wars, massive famine. Nearly all of that MAN-MADE!

We definitely don't need another war. Eliminating the need for Somalis to turn to Piracy would curb the problem, but it's a huge job that we already tried to do once and failed. If they lay off US ships now, we shouldn't do anything. Let the rest of the world do something for a change. I can't resist this..."TEA BAGGERS". Angry white guys who don't want to pay taxes aren't hip to slang apparently.

Start arming ALL American ships in that part of the world with 2 50-caliber machine guns ... and blow the hell out of any pirate ship that approaches!!!! ... the hell with international law that protects pirates by not allowing arms in international water (what about self defense!!)

What laws are there that prohibit weapons in international waters?
Every passenger ship has weapons available to trained crew.
Every fishing vessel has weapons on board.
It is the large shipping companies who do not want the liability that can associate with weapons aboard them.
They will have to chose their poison more carefully as the entire Somalian mess escalates AND others around the world adopt the Somalian business model.

Is the U.S. ready to occupy and manage a country the size of Texas with 10 million largely illiterate and starving Muslim fanatics. Once there, we will be mired for decades. Also, it is not possible to isolate a military action to only Somalia. Careful with our altruism people.

I reckon I need to sit with this one for a bit along with a rather big pot of tea. I don't think that with the war in the middle east and all that, the U.S. or us have the stones for that kind of conflict. Your point on Al Qaeda joining that fray is a good one and scary too. That would be a good reason to blow them to kingdom come.

I don't want the price of everything going up because shipping companies put private armies on their boats. Hey.
